The heat from a pellet insert is easy to control. It’s all a function of the feed-rate of the pellets. The faster the pellets are fed through the appliance, the more heat into the home. Slower feed rates mean less heat and longer burn times from a load of pellets. Depending on the feed-rate, pellet inserts can burn for many hours without needing to be refilled. Simply fill up the hopper (a storage bin in the appliance) with pellets, set the easy to use controls and relax! This way, most of the heat produced by the insert will end up inside your home rather than wasted. Efficiencies of pellet inserts normally exceed 80%. Choosing your Pellets
The pellets that these inserts use look similar to rabbit food, but are made from recycled wood pieces. Saw dust, bark, wood chips and wood shavings are compressed to form these pellets. During the manufacturing process, the moisture content is reduced to single digits. This greatly increases efficiencies and also helps pellets to burn more completely and much cleaner. There are two grades of pellets: standard and premium. The standard grade pellets can contain bark, scraps and additives which creates more ash when burned. These lesser quality pellets should be avoided if possible. Premium grade pellets also vary in their efficiency. It’s best to look for pellets with a low ash content and high heat output.
